I was eagerly anticipating the release of this sequel and it did not disappoint. Although the pace is a bit slower than Powerless, I enjoyed following both Kai and Paedyn’s stories. I have to admit, I was less enthusiastic about Kitt’s occasional POV chapters (and if I’m brutally honest, I don’t think the book would have been the worse had they not been included – but then he definitely wasn’t my favourite prince!)
The story begins exactly where Powerless leaves off, following Pae and Kai after the end of the final trial and the shock ending. I loved how easily I was able to slip back into the world of Ilya and Loot and enjoyed being able to explore more of the world in this book – seeing the city beyond the Scorches as well as other places that appear on the lovely endpaper map (always a good sign in a book!).
There were some similarly intimate scenes to Powerless and we get to see how much Pae and Kai and drawn to each other, and how love/hate their relationship is, which I liked – although I did find a couple of the scenes a bit unbelievable. If enemies-to-lovers is your thing, I can confidently say you’ll enjoy this book!
I also liked the fact that some of the characters in Powerless reappear in this book. Lenny was one of my favourites and I was so happy to see him pop up again – and there’s still a character that I’m wondering about weeks after finishing the book. If that’s not a recommendation, I don’t know what is!
And the ending?! What can I say? While I did predict it, I still relished it and I can’t wait for book three! I’ve also got Powerful on my list to read next – and I do love a prequel.
Reckless is the second book in the Powerless series by Lauren Roberts and was published in July 2024 by Simon & Schuster. The final book in the trilogy is planned for an April 2025 release.
